A/1C "Skip" Youngdahl joined Echo Flt from Hanscom Field, MA where
he was an F-102 mechanic. In Dec 1960, he was selected as OCS's 1st
Group Ops & Tng Officer. Lt. Youngdahl graduated in the top half of
our class and headed for Williams AFB for pilot training. From 1962
to 1965, Skip flew C-118s for MATS at McGuire AFB, NJ. Hickam AFB,
HI, was Capt. Youngdahl's next assignment flying C-118s and C-124s
in the Pacific and Southeast Asia.
He was discharged in April 1967 and joined TWA's Flight Engineer training
in Kansas City. TWA then assigned him to Los Angeles, CA from October
1967 to 1972. He flew B-707s, B-727s and L-1011s. Served one year
with the California ANG (Hollywood ANG as it was locally known) at
Van Nuys, CA (only for the money!). Moved to Incline Village, NV in
1972. Based in San Francisco, CA, New York, NY, St. Louis, MO and
a short term in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia TDY flying for Saudi Arabian
Airlines. Flew domestic and international flights. In September of
1984 moved to St. Louis, MO and flew B-767 as International First
Officer and DC-9/MD-80 as Captain until retirement in August 1991.
Since retirement he's been keeping busy restoring old Ford Mustangs
and traveling. Skip spent time as 1964 ½ - 1966 Mustang Gold Card Judge for
the Mustang Club of America and went to many National Shows to judge
cars in his field. For 17 years he owned a 1965 Mustang GT convertible
that won many National Shows. Another of his Mustangs, a 1965
GT coupe, was selected for display in the June 2003 100th Anniversary
Celebration of the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, MI.
He's traveled to all seven continents and in 2002 took trips to the
Western and Eastern Caribbean, Alaska and China's Silk Road. Skip
says,
"Ever since taking that flight from Providence, RI to San Antonio
in 1955 for Air Force Basic Training I've been hooked on keeping my
feet moving."
In January of 2004 Skip made a PCS move from St. Louis to Mebane, NC
to be near his daughter Donna (born during OCS at the Lackland hospital)
and two of his grandsons. He spends a lot of time playing golf and
working on this website.
In July of 2007 Skip married Nancy Eppard, a lovely "Carolina Girl", after three years
of courtship. They currently live in Mebane and spend a lot of time
playing golf and traveling to where ever the whim takes them.
He
has two daughters and four grandsons.
