| "For reasons of adventure more than patriotism, Victor Robert (Silvestri) enlisted in the USAF...1951," Victor's bio recalls. A short time later, he found himself in Korea -- a radio operator at a bombing range... occasionally a B-26 crewman. "After 18 months in Korea...returned to...duties at Randolph," training radio operators in the B-29 program. He was also a MARS radioman, air police guard, survival instructor and base ops dispatcher. He married Shirley in '55 and went to Puerto Rico in '57. He joined OCS's Echo Flt in Sep '60. Victor was a DG from OCS; Lt Silvestri was assigned to Keesler for Officer Comm Sch. He stayed on as an Instructor for several years, teaching basic electronics. With the advent of NORAD's Command and Control Sys at Cheyenne Mountain, Victor was selected training cadre at Colorado Springs, CO. Back at Keesler, Capt Silvestri would take the Staff Comm Off Crs. In '76, the Silvestri's journeyed to Japan where Victor would command the 5th Comm Sq/315AD, a job that required him to traverse many FE installations--Okinawa, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand -- while Shirley tended their 6 children in Tokyo. In '69, Capt Silvestri took command of the 2132 Comm Sq/Tachikawa. In '71, Victor was assigned to Eglin AFB, FL as a radar bombing unit project officer. He retired in 1973, a major. Victor served as Chairman/Valparaiso Citizens Assoc was named in Florida's Who's Who -1973/74. In '84, Victor joined the US Postal Svc, retiring in 1985. Victor and Shirley make their home in the Euchee Valley where he is writing a book on Florida history -- fifteen grandchildren visit from time to time. |
