sent us the following on July 19, 2003:
Hope
all are having an enjoyable summer. Can't say mine has been, but it
was not planned to be. After regaining control of all the minor diabetic
problems I was experiencing in late May and early June, I went ahead
with the planned right hip replacement.
Surgery was performed on 17 June. This was followed
by 3 weeks of hospitalization for rehabilitation and physical therapy.
All went very well, thank you. I have been at home now for two weeks.
Strenuous physical therapy 3 times per week. I am told that my muscular
recovery is well ahead of schedule. I shall be weaned off of physical
therapy over the next month.
Following a follow-up consultation with my surgeon on 28 July, I should
graduate from the walker to a cane and shortly thereafter, should be
almost ready to participate in foot races. Ha!!! I am hoping this will
mean the end to motion and weight bearing limitations!
I am greatly indebted to my 18-year-old grandson Corey, who gave up
his summer to stay with me and look after my needs during my recovery.
He will remain 'til mid-August, at which time he will be off to college
- his freshman year. Grandson Joel (age 8, who lives with me) has spent
the past 6 weeks with his aunt and uncle in Trinidad, Colorado. Some
of you ladies may recall Joel's aunt, Maryann, who (during OCS) resided
with Flo and our children in Billy Mitchell Village. She participated
in many of the OCS and OCS wives events, and appears with Flo in many
of the OCS photos. Anyway, Joel will be returning from Trinidad tomorrow.
I will be most happy to have my delightful little devil of a grandson
back in the household! I have missed him greatly!
I wonder — am I the only OCS grad and grandparent
who is raising grandchildren? In August we are going to test my physical
recovery. We have scheduled two "camping" trips — a week at the Witherspoon
Ranch in south-central Colorado, followed by a week-long camping out
and fishing at Lake Dillon, west of Denver. Should be great fun! The
end of August means the grandsons will be returning to school and I
to a more normal routine.
Well, that's it from here. Hope this finds you all in good health and
spirits.
Best wishes, Jim Hull
