& Joe at 2003 reunion
|
| Joe joined the AF in 1955, married Pat in 1957, worked ECM on RB-36, B-47 and B-52 before joining Bravo Flt. From OCS, Lt Elder went to Shaw AFB, NC via Keesler for ground electronics. He had "lots of TDYs -- Cuban missile crisis -- Key West -- Venezuela." In 1967 it was back to Keesler for "Staff" tng before assignment to Udorn, Thailand commanding a small Tact Radio Rpr Sq (supporting "spooks" and Thai Ops). It was Hq ADC in 1968 in Colorado Springs in a loggie job. "Boring," says Joe. In 1971, he commanded Bucks Harbor AFS, ME. Next duty was Tehran as military advisor. Then, in 1974 to Hanscom AFB, MA retiring in 1975 as a major. "...took a small city job -- big fish, small pond, very rewarding...did all the budgeting, purchasing, contracting, etc," Joe writes, "...six years was enough ... resigned and went to college (GI Bill)...degree in Social Studies & History...since 1986, living in the slow lane - built a few houses - became a snowbird - golf - enjoy watching 2 grandchildren grow. Wife, Pat still with me-she apparently has had no better offers yet-- as the saying goes, 'she (like Ginger Rogers) copied all the steps-only backwards and in high heels' - truly a sainted woman!" |
